Bucs coach Mike Budenholzer slumped to Heat after 1st round NBA playoffs

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Milwaukee Bucks reportedly fired coach Mike Budenholzer on Thursday.

Budenholzer finished his fifth season in Milwaukee after the first-place Bucks were eliminated from the postseason in a shocking first-round collapse at the hands of the 8th-seeded Miami Heat.

The Bucs finished first in the Eastern Conference in Budenholzer’s three seasons, but that success never translated to the postseason. In addition to their 2020–21 NBA championship, the Bucks twice exited the postseason in the East semifinals and took a 2–0 series lead to the Toronto Raptors in the 2018–19 Eastern Conference Finals.

Budenholzer was 271-120 in regular season games, but 39-26 in the postseason over those five seasons. Budenholzer notoriously failed to adjust programs and coached repeatedly. His disastrous decision against the Heat this postseason finally sealed his fate, which seemed to go back and forth throughout his Bucks tenure until the 2019 playoffs.

Because general manager Jon Horst has a close relationship with Budenholzer, Budenholzer’s job security is not in question through the 2023 postseason, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. However, former Bucks owner Mark Lasry was “a leading voice behind warming Budenholzer’s seat during that 2021 postseason run.”

The 2021 title bought Budenholzer some goodwill He signed a three-year contract extension that summer.

Previously, he was the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks for five seasons (230-219 overall) and an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs from 1996-2013. He won Coach of the Year in his first season in Milwaukee and in 2014-15 with the Hawks.
